In Acts, Paul summarizes the life of David in one simple sentence: “Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his ancestors and his body decayed.” Not a very detailed or encouraging summary, but it snapshots the most important part of David’s life. How David lived in his time left a legacy for his family, the nation of Israel, and for us Christians, thousands of years later. The most important things we can do with our short life on earth are to serve, seek God’s purposes for our lives, and use our different seasons and generations to glorify God.

Is there someone who has had an impact on your faith journey? What legacy or example did they show you?
We hear phrases like “your life is a mist,” “momento mori,” and even “you only live once” that remind us of our finite life here on earth. What thoughts or feelings do you have while hearing or thinking of those?
In what ways can your finite life on earth reflect the infinite reality of God’s kingdom to come?
What purposes does God have for you in this season?
What legacy are you leaving? How does it compare to the legacy you want to leave?
