Book: 1 Samuel

The world often tells us what’s “reasonable” and we start to believe we can’t expect more. In 1 Samuel, Saul tells David he’s too young to fight Goliath. Similarly, in Acts, a lame man sits outside the temple gate daily, hoping for spare change. Sometimes we settle for what feels safe, familiar, or “good enough.”
But giants don’t fall at the feet of the reasonable. God invites us to believe for the ridiculous—the miraculous, the immeasurable, the Ephesians 3:20 kind of life.  Don’t let comfort or feelings of unworthiness keep you outside the gate. Victory doesn’t depend on size but on strategy, faith, and knowing who you are in God. To win the fight, you need the right perspective, the right voice, the right weapons, and the right confidence—focusing not on fear or self, but on the power of God. Just like David, when we rely on what God has equipped us with and trust in His name, we can overcome any enemy that stands in our way.

Samuel anointed David as king, but he couldn’t rule Israel yet. Only after 15 years of waiting, under the command and service of King Saul, would David become the king of Israel. As Christians we can expect to wait – we wait on God to answer our prayers, to change lives, to speak to us, and ultimately to return. So how do we, as David writes in Psalm 40, “wait patiently for the Lord?”

In this new series, we look into the life of David, exploring how we can follow his example and become a person that God is looking for. God used David for amazing things, and we believe God wants to do the same now, with us, if we are ready. While the world may look at all kinds of things to decide if we are ready, God looks only at the heart. David, a “man after God’s own heart,” sought God, served humbly, and was completely satisfied in God.

A bewildered heart feels lost, confused, and doubtful. When we feel bewildered or perplexed, we can lean on the God who cares and gives peace, go to the God who gives peace, and be faithful to do the next right thing.

God wants to grow our faith, but growth doesn’t happen in places of comfort. Our faith flourishes in the places between where we are and our future growth, our faith is grounded in the Bible, and our faith is tested in sacrifice. We must work out our faith to see growth.

Sometimes we walk into prayer with an expectation of what we want God to do about our problems or circumstances. But the way God answers your prayers will surprise you – your answer will not look like what you thought it would.

Expectation precedes preparation. We will pray, act, and think differently when we expect God to speak to us when we speak to Him. We must first, then, surrender the obstacles we think keep God from speaking to us.
